Biblical Interpretation

What causes people to interpret the Bible incorrectly?

There are so many different ways to interpret the Bible... how do we know what is the correct interpretation?

Many people sit down to read the Bible and read it with their own eyes and take the words to fit what they want them to say. However, to read the Bible you need to remember a few crucial things.

1. It's actually God's word, not our word - we didn't write it... therefore, our job is to try and figure out what God is saying, not what we want it to say.

2. Each scripture is part of a BIG PICTURE. The Bible is a jigsaw puzzle... when we put it all together we can see a beautiful picture. To understand however, what one part is saying, we must try and understand the rest.

3. The Bible is a complete text. Some people are 'helicopter readers' - that is they 'fly into the Bible and pick out one verse' and read it and understand it out of context.

4. The Bible contains a number of different genres! Some of it is poetry. Some is apocalypic (ie metaphorical). Some if history. Some books are even a mix of one or more type of genre.

So what are some of the other reasons why people interpret the Bible SO incorrectly?

  2. Well, to me everyone is different. Even if everyone reads the same bible or what ever they are all going to understand it differently. Not everyone understand and interprets things the same so it's hard to know what they are exactly saying.
