Slavery is a word that makes me think of rich people buying poor people to do their dirty work. It makes me think of Joseph from Genesis, and the Israelites in Egypt.
But slavery is something that has existed right throughout history. Rich people justifying the purchase of a poor person to do their (often) dirty work by saying that at least they have food and water and some sort of life to live now.
Poor people accept (or were often forced anyway...) slavery work because they simply have no other method of existence.
As a Christian, we get mixed messages! We're told to love our neighbours - so don't use others as slaves. However, we're told to help the poor - so why not pay someone to help you out.
Of course, slavery doesn't exist in 2009! Or does it. Some large corporations (Nike et al) use workers in third world countries to make their products; thereby making it cheaper to hire a poor person, and easier to make a large profit. Again, it's easy to justify this. 'We're helping break the poverty cycle!'
We're going to view the movie, Amazing Grace. This is a story of a Christian standing up against slavery!
But first; here's a question to think about (and blog about!) - Why do you think it's important for Christian's to stand up for what they believe in? (Whether slavery or other things!)

HI, i believe that while slavery should be abolished, i also beleive that people can still be hired out as hired help, eg manservant(butler), choffur. As long as the conditions are good, the hirerling should also have the same rights as any other worker as they are one. They should be allowed to quite when they judge fit, unless otherwise bound.
ReplyDeletehello :)
ReplyDeletei agree with paddy. But to sort of answer the question, i think it isn't just christians that should (and do) stand up for what they believe in, i also think that many non- christians should(and once again do) stand up for what they believe in. I think that it is extremely important for anyone to stand up for their beliefs, because their beliefs is like what they base their lives on, what they dedicate most of their time to and what they as their own person think is right. it is a matter of personal opionion.
over and out
Why Hullo! I think its important for anyone, christian or non christian, to stand up for what they believe in. conforming sucks anyway.

I belive that you should stand up for yourself and say what you think because even though you may think that your coment may not be inportant someone else may think it to be helpful.
ReplyDeletei think it is very important for christians to stand up 4 wat they believe, if you hide your voice then no one will ever find the truth!
ReplyDeleteyes
ReplyDeletei agree
...
it doesnt matter what type of person you are. everyone needs a say in anything and everything. whether quoted or your own personal opinons
ReplyDeleteI believe that yes it is important for us, as christians, to satnd up for what we believe in.
ReplyDeleteIf you dont be independent and stand up for your self, no one will hear the truth and therefore no one will understand why we believe in what we believe in.
i think slavery should be abolished, because we are all equal to one another and no one deseves to be treated lower than anyone else. the people who work in the sweat factoires making converse and other things are paid like a dollar, whereas the famous people who advertise the shoes are paid millions and i just don't think thats fair.

Iagree with Chrissy. But I think that Christians should stand up for what they believe in because God has told us to speak of the joy he has given us. To be fearless for God means to stand up and speak about him, no matter what you have to cop from everyone else after you do so. In the bible it says that the Lord will spit the luke warm out of his mouth, if Christians don't speak of their faith, they are luke warm. It's a matter of taking the courage God gives you and using it to change the world.

I agree with the people above. I do think that Christians should stand up for what they believe in - no matter what the consequence because your opinion may have helped someone.
ReplyDeletei believe christians should stand up for what they believe in.... i know that its hard to because of the way society is.but also i belive that we becareful what we say because they may hurt someone elses feelings. so what we say and what we believe in we should stand up for but we should becareful how we do it.
ReplyDeleteeveryone can have their own opinions; its what we do with them. If we just accept them then it's fine, but we can't judge those people becuase they think differently to us.

ReplyDeleteHm. well, this question is hard.
decisions require opinions.
Making decisions means you will have to learn about what you need to decide.
Anyone understand?

Hey as I was reading this I came up with a thought. As christians we are supposed to stand up for what we believe in right which is God right? I think that when we stand up for what (or who) we beleive in it shows that we actually care about the matter and what happens.. Just my thought

i hate slavery and the people that put them into slavery. they were soo racist i dont think ive ever seen a white slave!
ReplyDeleteHey,
ReplyDeleteI agree with Paddy & Chrissy, and a lot of others. But I thought of something different... instead of saying "everyone should stand up for what they believe in" (which I think is entirely true), what if you looked at it the other way.. lets say nobody stood up for what they believe in (e.g. Christianity), how long do you think Christianity (as a religion) would actually last?? I think that standing up for what you believe in is one of the most important things you can do.. otherwise, if nobody else stands up.. Christianity would disappear.
